I hope you are all doing well and know that you are missed by many. 

As we look to continue your learning, your teachers will make materials, activities and assignments available to help you continue with your education. At the moment we will focus on Math, English Language Arts and French Immersion Language Arts. There will certainly be challenges for all of us as we adjust to this method of instruction, but we are all hopeful that we can work together to help everyone get the most of this experience.  

From the Resource Department at EWG, we encourage you to strengthen the basics (what a great time to learn those multiplication facts!), and to continue with your reading.  If you don’t have a book to read, Mrs. Daigle has added some suggestions in the language arts tab.  Remember to read at your level, and practice your comprehension strategies.  For some of you, reading out loud helps, so find a quiet place, or a willing listener and read aloud. 

Some strategies to practice:

üMake predictions:  what do you think is going to happen next?

üAsk questions:  Stop and ask yourself questions to make sure the text makes sense.  Reread the text if you need more information.

üMake connections:  Think about what you already know about the text.  Find ways to relate the text to your own experiences, to other texts you have read, and to the world around you.

üMake comparisons:  what are some similarities between the main character and yourself?  What would you do in their situation?

üIdentify:  What do you think the author wants you to understand?  What is the author’s purpose?  Is it to persuade, inform, or entertain the reader?  What makes you think this? Find the important details, the main idea, and the theme (author’s message) in the text.

üVisualize:  create mental images of the setting, characters and events in the story.

üInfer:  Use clues in the text and your own knowledge to fill in the gaps and draw conclusions.

üEvaluate:  Think about the text as a whole and form opinions about what you read.
